This proposal came through our parents. At first, everything seemed fine the basic requirements matched, and we started talking. But with each passing minute, he revealed himself to be a complete lunatic. Here were his outrageous demands:
1. I must work full time and deposit all my income into HIS account because “after marriage, there’s togetherness, not two individuals.”
2. We would live with his parents and siblings, and I would be solely responsible for the entire kitchen. He even sent me a list of fancy Indian dishes and parathas I needed to learn before marriage three full meals a day. Apparently, he expected me to cook like a master chef AND work full time, because “a house can’t sustain on one income.”
3. He wanted physical intimacy before marriage, claiming it was part of the “getting to know each other” stage. When I stood my ground and said not even a handshake before marriage, he exploded, accusing me of being fake because I studied in a co-education university.
4. He constantly demanded proof that I was “clean and truthful.” One day, I told him I was leaving home at 1 PM to meet female friends, but got delayed and left at 2:30 PM. He picked a fight, accusing me of lying and being dishonest over 90 minutes!
5. In one whole year, he called me only three times because his family was “always around.” He wanted me to keep texting constantly, but never made time to talk properly or meet. He met me just once, halfway between our cities, and then said he wouldn’t meet again unless I agreed to let him touch me. Meanwhile, he kept demanding “proof” that I was untouched.
6. When I went to a car dealership to fix my brakes, I updated him at every step. During a standard test drive (with a mechanic, as is normal and safe in the US), he lost it accusing me of being inappropriate. Not once did he offer to accompany me but always had the audacity to judge.
7. He had no hobbies, yet got furious if I didn’t laugh at his gross sexual jokes.
8. And the final insult? He kept blackmailing me into getting physical, saying I was too old by Desi standards, should be grateful for his proposal, and that I’d struggle to get pregnant at this age.
Meanwhile, he smugly claimed his family gets better Rishta’s all the time and I wouldn’t. How low can someone stoop?! My parents were in the loop the entire time and they were FURIOUS. This wasn’t just a bad match. This was a walking red flag factory.
Question: Should there be a law to restrict such people from entering into marriage?
Option 1: Yes
Option 2: No
