I Learnt a Lesson From my Breakup

Bro, I completed my master’s, and now I’m working peacefully. A few years ago, I went through a breakup because my ex cheated on me with another girl. It completely broke me. I was so scared to tell my parents as they are strict. For almost a year, I kept everything to myself. Then one day, I gathered all my courage and told my parents everything about my relationship, my breakup, and how badly I was struggling.

We’re a typical middle-class South Indian family. My parents were always strict while I was growing up. But that day, they weren’t strict. My dad cried seeing my pain. That was the 1st time I saw my dad crying. I feel guilty for it. My mom said, “Just come back home. Don’t worry about your education loan or anything else. We’ll take care of everything. We just want you to be okay.”

They didn’t judge me. “They didn’t care what society would say. They only cared that their daughter was alive.” It took me almost 2 years to heal. Not because another person came into my life but because my parents never left my side. Today, I earn well, cleared my education loan, paid off our house loan, bought a new house for my parents, and every year I bring them to the USA.

Seeing them smile is my biggest achievement. I don’t have much interest in marriage anymore. My parents know that. Their answer is always the same: “As long as you’re happy, we’re happy.” If you’re going through a breakup, don’t rush into another relationship just to forget someone. Heal yourself. Spend time with yourself. Learn to enjoy your own company. And if you can, tell your parents. They may scold you. They may cry. But they won’t stop loving you.

Sometimes, the people we’re most afraid to tell become the very people who save us.
