Due to parental pressure for marriage, I said yes to a guy. He is a good person, takes care of me a lot, but lacks emotional understanding and has anger issues. I am a sensitive, introverted person. In the past, his parents had made multiple calls asking for land from my parents, for which I informed my husband that I was not okay with it. This later led to a big fight, which brought up other issues like living in the same city as his parents. His parents became really angry over this and spoke badly about me.
Later, my mother made them realise the adjustment issues faced by any girl and the disrespectful behaviour of their son. After this, my in-laws informed my husband that if a girl had already refused to take any property from her parents, then a man should respect it. Later, my husband apologised to my family and sorted things out. We stayed in a different city and took time to trust each other again.
His mother is overly showy and doesn’t like anyone else apart from her friend circle or own family, and treats others as beneath her, including the FIL’s side of the family. My husband doesn’t respect this behaviour of hers and conveys that as well. Now my husband wants to move to the same city as his parents again, but I have to really fight with my husband to make him understand all these issues I face during my stay there. This puts a dent in my relationship with my husband and in-laws.
I prefer to stay away to keep the peace, but my husband feels I should overcome my sensitivity and be more vocal with his parents when things done by them are wrong. I am not sure about the issues a daughter-in-law may face while living near in-laws. They expect us to live with them, and my husband won’t be able to go against his parents’ wishes. According to him, living with his parents would help with raising future children, but I fear their dominating nature would impact our parenting.
