I completed my graduation during the COVID period, and like many others, I struggled to find a job. It was a very difficult time, and many people from my batch were also unemployed. Later, through a known reference, I applied to an organization. The manager mentioned that he knew the person who referred me and that I was given an opportunity because of that. However, I was not selected directly.
I went through full interview process before selecting. They initially asked me to work as an intern for six months and said they would consider a full-time offer afterward based on my work performance. I agreed because I didn’t want to miss the opportunity after facing so many struggles. From day one, the environment was not easy. As a fresher, I expected guidance and support, but instead, I felt I was treated differently. I was given work by seniors and completed it sincerely.
But once, an HR came and harshly questioned me, “Who told you to do this work?” in a loud voice, making the entire office go silent and look at me. When I explained that a senior had assigned it, that same senior questioned me again. This incident happened on my very first day. Even after that, I continued working hard and stayed silent because I didn’t want to lose the opportunity.
One day, I noticed my team members going into the manager’s room and coming back smiling while looking at me. Later, I overheard them talking about how a CCTV camera was specifically pointed at my monitor to observe what I was doing. At one point, someone even stood behind me, joking about reading what I was typing in my Excel sheet.
That’s when I realized I was being specifically monitored. Despite all this, I continued working quietly. But internally, I felt that I was being observed more than being guided. During the Rakhi festival, even though it was already a holiday, I was asked to inform the manager by my senior. When I did, he allowed the leave but made a remark that made me feel uncomfortable about prioritizing personal occasions. However, after that, the situation became even more difficult, and eventually, I decided to leave the job.
I never expected special treatment just a normal work environment where I could learn and grow as a fresher. Yes, I came through a reference, but I did not do anything wrong. I completed the full interview process and earned my position. Even though the manager helped me get the interview opportunity, it often felt like he was doing me a favour personally. If they were not comfortable with hiring me, it would have been better to reject me at the beginning rather than putting me through such treatment. After leaving, I joined another organization, and today I am happy with my career.
