My best friend and I moved abroad for our Master’s, where I met this girl who was in our class. We quickly formed a group of six friends, including two couples one of whom was a playboy. The girl, my friend, and I started hanging out more often. I’m more of an introvert compared to my friend, who was crazy about her from day one. I could tell she wasn’t very interested in him.
My friend used to make subtle moves whenever we hung out, often making her feel a bit uncomfortable. That’s how our two years passed, and after graduation, only the three of us moved to the same city for work, so we stayed connected. Eventually, my friend confessed his feelings to her and was rejected. After that, she began avoiding both him and me, likely because he and I lived together.
However, she still chatted with me. After 2 to 3 months, I managed to get all of us to hang out again. Things were a bit awkward at first she was cautious with her words but after a couple of weekends, things started to feel normal again. Then my friend ruined things again by confessing everything over a phone call. This time it hit harder because she was already stressed about not landing the job she wanted.
Around the same time, my friend went back to India to visit family and friends. I reached out to her again, and she was open to hanging out with me. I noticed she was more relaxed around me. She confided in me, even told me how my friend messed everything up. We started hanging out almost every day after work or on weekends.
She became so comfortable that she’d fall asleep on my shoulder, trusting me to take care of her and I did. I started developing real feelings for her and felt she might feel the same. But I was too afraid to express them. I didn’t want to ruin what we had. Then my friend came back, and we all decided to hang out over a long weekend. That’s when he sensed something was going on.
While watching a movie, she chose to sit next to me despite there being plenty of space, and she kept reaching for me. Later, while drinking, she got a bit drunk and fell asleep on my shoulder, holding my arm tightly. My friend gave me a look like I was a backstabber because he liked her but never had a chance.
Since then, the tension between the three of us has only grown. And I think I waited too long to confess. Recently, the girl told me that her parents have started looking for a match for her through arranged marriage. She’s not sure whether she wants to go that route.
Meanwhile, my friend is still obsessed with her and keeps asking her out, which is making her avoid both him and me again. I don’t know what to do anymore.
